The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS has unveiled an updated guide for its Contactless Passport Renewal System, providing eligible Nigerians living abroad with a faster and more convenient way to renew their passports.
The revised guide, released on the Service’s official X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday, outlines how applicants can complete their passport renewal—including biometric enrolment—without physically visiting a Nigerian embassy or high commission.
The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to digitise public services and improve access to passport renewal for Nigerians in the diaspora.
Here are the Step-by-Step Guide to the Contactless Passport Renewal Process
Eligible applicants are required to:
1. Visit the official NIS Passport Application Portal.
2. Click “Continue” on the welcome page.
3. Select “Apply for Renewal/Re-issue.”
4. Create an account and verify your identity using your National Identification Number (NIN) and date of birth.
5. Complete the passport application form.
6. Select the Nigerian embassy or high commission where your passport will be processed.
7. Upload all required supporting documents.
8. Pay the passport booklet fee.
9. Obtain your Application ID and Reference Number.
10. Under “Application Status/Book Appointment,” select the Contactless option.
11. Read the instructions and click “I Understand and Opt In.”
12. Download the NIS Mobile App.
13. Sign in or create a profile.
14. Select Passport Application Services.
15. Open Passport Biometrics Enrolment, enter your Application ID and Reference Number, and verify your eligibility.
16. Capture your facial image and fingerprints.
17. Complete the liveness verification.
18. Pay the contactless biometric enrolment fee.
19. Submit your biometric details.
Who is eligible to use the Contactless Passport Renewal System?
According to the Nigeria Immigration Service, the contactless option is only available to applicants who meet the eligibility requirements.
Applicants who are declared ineligible after verification will be required to return to the application portal and schedule a physical biometric appointment at their selected Nigerian embassy or high commission.
The Service stated:
> “If response is INELIGIBLE, then it means applicant should return to the landing page of the portal to book physical appointment at the Embassy/High Commission.”
Supporting Documents Must Still Be Submitted
Although biometric capture can now be completed remotely, successful applicants are still required to send the following documents to the embassy or high commission selected during their application:
* Printed passport application form.
* Passport payment receipt.
* Biometric enrolment payment receipt.
* Current passport.
* A self-addressed return envelope.
The documents should be forwarded to the designated processing mission to enable the completion of the passport renewal process.
How to Track Your Passport Application
The Nigeria Immigration Service advised applicants that passport tracking becomes available two weeks after submission.
Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications through the NIS Online Passport Tracking Platform or the NIS Mobile App.
