Millicent Umoru-O

The National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Prof. Dickson Akoh, has charged Nigerians to continue to live in peace and harmony at all times.

Prof Akoh made this call in Abuja on the occasion of the 61 years celebration of our independence as a nation.

He admonished Nigerians to always propagate messages that would bring about enduring peace, adding that all hands must be on deck to achieve a peaceful nation.

He said inspite of the agitations going around in some parts of the country, we must continue to live together as a people despite our diverse social, cultural, religious and ethnic affiliations because we are a nation with same goals and objectives, as together we can build and achieve a united entity devoid of discrimination.

Prof. Akoh added that we have a course to celebrate as Nigeria is completely far from British rule, adding that we are Nigerians so we should celebrate the day with enthusiasm and pride.

He further stressed that we should endeavour to always remember and pray for our hero’s past who gave us freedom after suffering pains and humiliations.

“As a people we are so different, but that which unites us is our independence, therefore, people nationwide should honour it and never forget how hard it was to get it. Let us salute our martyrs for the sacrifices they made and appreciate them for giving us today our independence.”

While calling on the youths nationwide to avoid all forms of criminalities, violence and conflict, he charged them not to allow themselves to be used to commit crimes as that often times leads to loss of lives and properties.

Prof. Akoh added that security should be seen as a collective responsibility, hence all hands must be on deck to fight the surge called insecurity.

However, he called on Government at all levels as well as individuals in all aspects of human endeavour to intensify efforts in the fight against insecurity as security is everyone’s business.
