Men’s summer shirts: Short-sleeve styles for every occasion

By Daniella Ikhuoya

Ah, the trusty men’s summer shirt. Although loud and proud in design, they usually reside in a special place at the back of the wardrobe for months, before being dusted off, like a vintage wine, and resurrected for the holiday season.

Every summer, on beaches the world over, from Cornwall to Cape Verde, you’ll see men of varying ages (and different waistband widths) rocking statement shirts, from bright, James Bond-style Cuban collars to flamboyant, floral Hawaiian classics.

Children fear them, partners loathe them, but us blokes love ‘em. This synonymous piece of attire is as much a sign of sunshine as the sweet smell of barbecue. Though they don’t have to be eccentric.

A subtle, breathable, long-sleeved grandad shirt works too. Because dressing for the summer isn’t about trying to dazzle – unless you want to, of course – but looking good and feeling comfortable in something practical for warmer temperatures.

Given the chance, we reckon Don Draper would’ve worn this top for a swanky, solstice cocktail party in Miami. With subtle floral details and a contrast pattern trim, it oozes mid-century cool. Light, floaty and easy to match, this chocolate brown shirt is a classy choice for a vintage-loving gent.
