AEDC Reports Blackout in Parts of Abuja After Alleged Land Grabbers’ Encroachment on Maitama Substation

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced a power outage affecting Maitama District and surrounding communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the alleged invasion and encroachment on its C2 Maitama Substation by suspected land grabbers.

The electricity distribution company disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the affected facility as a critical power distribution hub serving residential areas, businesses, diplomatic missions, and government institutions.

According to AEDC, the incident has been escalated to the highest levels of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, personally intervening to ensure a swift resolution.

“AEDC wishes to inform our valued customers and the general public that the matter concerning the invasion and encroachment on the C2 Maitama Substation has now been escalated to the highest levels of the Federal Capital Territory Administration,” the company stated.

The company added that the FCT Minister had been fully briefed on the situation and had taken immediate steps to address the issues responsible for the ongoing electricity disruption.

“We are pleased to confirm that the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has been fully briefed on the situation and has personally intervened to facilitate an urgent resolution of the issues responsible for the current power disruption affecting Maitama and adjoining areas,” the statement added.

AEDC said it is working in collaboration with the FCT Minister, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to secure the substation, safeguard the critical electricity infrastructure, and restore normal power supply as quickly as possible.

The distribution company commended Wike for what it described as his swift intervention and commitment to resolving the crisis.

“We commend the Honourable Minister for his swift intervention and unwavering commitment to resolving the matter,” AEDC said.

The company also appealed to customers for patience and understanding, assuring residents and businesses affected by the outage that every effort is being made to safely restore electricity supply.

The blackout has impacted electricity consumers in Maitama and neighbouring districts, with AEDC yet to provide a specific timeline for the restoration of power.
